The picture is of an injured Mexican freetail bat that attached itself to the external fuel tank of the space shuttle right before it launched. This photo was taken by one of the hundreds of cameras filming the liftoff. NASA officials were quoted as saying that in all likelihood the bat perished and did not survive it's journey into the vacuum of space.
"Pwned," in case you don't know, is computer nerd for "you got owned." You'll see pictures or video of someone getting hurt or killed and the word "pwned" shows up on the screen spontaneously. I think that's funny and tried to duplicate that here.
