Got back yesterday from Boston, Mass. It was my first time in New England. The closest I'd ever been was Georgia. I went up there for my cousin's wedding. Here are my observations:
- You can't throw a fucking stone without hitting a college or university anywhere near or around the city.
- The accents of the people were not as pronounced as I thought they'd be. (I was annoying the shit out of the GF, though, with my "I'm going to pahk the cah and get some clam chowdah" lines.)
- New England is beautiful in the fall. It screams Mayflower, Plymouth Rock, Pilgrims, Indians, turkey, colorful leaves and shit. The leaves have only just begun turning and it was still very pretty.
- They love them some Red Sox.
- And Patriots.
- Didn't really see much support for the Celtics or Bruins.
- Everyone is white. (Highlight with mouse to reveal.)
- Lots of trees, rivers and rock outcroppings.
- It's really easy to see how so much of American culture sprung from this area.
- I enjoyed having a beer at the original Cheers.
Long story short - I really liked the place. If I ever go back I'd like to go back and check out Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. In fact, of all the places I've been in the U.S., I'd have to rank the Boston area behind only La Jolla, CA and anywhere in Texas. (Cue Bud Light's "Way Too Proud of Texas Guy" song.)
Fuck Bud Light and that "Way too proud of Texas Guy" song. What kind of stupid ass marketing is that? Let's clown our target customers. WTF? I can understand playing that in like Colorado or California or New England where people talk shit about Texans, but playing it in Texas? Dumb.

oh, i don't know. i think it's healthy to be able to laugh about ourselves. besides, it's really not a bad thing to be super proud of your place; imagine if we were north dakota.
yeah, new england is beautiful in the fall. next time go in january.

Yeah, I did keep saying to myself, "I bet this place really sucks in the winter."

I got the opportunity to spend a week up there last July for training. I loved it. The Red Sox weren't in town that week, so we took a tour of Fenway. One of the coolest things I have ever done. They took us to the press box, luxury suite, green monster, and field level. I can't say enough about that place. You get goosebumps just walking into Fenway. (At least I did, and I'm not even a red sox fan.)
IMO, The best thing about Boston is the public transportation. You can get from one point to another lickity split all by train. I love that. Why can't we have that in Texas?

I'd never heard that Bud Light ad. very funny, especially in the midst of my homesickness. There's four other Texans here in the program (grad & undergrad). When in the same room, we annoy people by talking about our home state ad nauseum, trading stories about places, events, etc.

I agree that the public transportation is great in Boston. The subway was designed really well and it's clean.
I went to Boston the summer before law school and, Ojo, I filmed a documentary of my own. This one featured myself and another South Texas grad standing right in front of the old, gothic looking Harvard law building explaining why Harvard was our second choice behind South Texas. We got some strange looks from passers-by.

If it weren't for the super long, freezing winters, I'd move up there. The T is awesome and the Guinness is fresher.
Oh yeah, I like Texas way too much to move away.
The Fenway Park tour IS really amazing. I second that recommendation.
